Commenting dryly....Of course you can draw a straight line between any two points on a map. Thats just the way that works.

The line was an exact east-west trajectory. That's what the article was talking about.

I had the same thought when I read that.

Ha ha ha ha!!! I love logical shit talking!

I bet he planned to start anew or wanted to be with someone, but decided against it a year in

yeah i was gonna say, wouldnt he just be faking memory loss to get out of getting in trouble for deliberately dissapearing?

Did they not go back to the area where he "woke" up to see if anyone recognized him?

It would seem that the police would have investigated his claims about amnesia -- trying to find out if anyone came in contact with him during his absence. I'm not sure what - if any - laws he would have broken by willingly "going missing", but making a false police report (concerning his disappearance) is presumably a violation of the law.

There is no indication in any police reports that the investigation continued after he was found safely. *If* he made a false report that is a misdemeanor charge with a statute of limitation of 10 years in Michigan.

There are stories of UFO abductions where his aunt lived, Great Barrington. What a coincidence.

Expand full comment

Has a single alleged UFO abduction ever been verified? Ever? Even one?

Expand full comment

How exactly would you verify something like that?

Expand full comment

I don't know. I do know, however, that the burden of verifying a claim falls on the person making the claim.

Not as much as it used to be. Ever since 2019 when the US airforce released video of an unidentified craft accelerating from a couple hundred miles per hour to nearly 1000 mph in the presence of military jets and radar, the existence of unknown craft/technology is becoming more and more acceptable to more people. However, alien abduction is still certainly looked at with side eyed skepticism and is in the realm of the mentally askew

This is one of those cases I've gone back to over the years to see updates - will definitely look for his book in the future!

Also, I'm not sure if you came across it during your research - but as a runner I'm generally interested in well, running, but also people who run. So, when I heard he was a runner that was one of the first things I used when trying to find out more information. Runners are generally a passionate bunch, and I know if I were to leave my current life, I'd likely continue participating in the sport.

So, I looked him up on Athlinks, which is generally reputable, and you can 'claim, dispute' results, if there are multiple people with the same name you can verify or claim your results by your age/birthday. I noticed the age thing was really inconsistent with Kubacki's race result history. I'm curious to know what that's about! I'm sure of all the questions regarding this case that is of little significance, but it was just something I noticed and don't think I've ever heard anyone else mention anything about it.

I just want to say that I love you blog and I've been using your articles with my esl students. It's a very interesting mystery, isn't it?

Hello, it looks like you went through the police reports thoroughly. I found a newspaper article that says Sgt. Charles Keebler who was in charge of this case, said that both hospital and police reports say that Steven Kubacki had gone to the hospital for a head injury prior to his disappearance. I am curious as to your thoughts on that possibility. Thank you for the article. It is really important we discuss these cases.

Wow. What a fascinating story. The fact that his ex-wife won't even talk about it just adds to the eeriness of mystery.

The cool thing about this story is that no one is going to rat Steve out, me included.

I take your comment to mean you are privy to the truth, assuming your claim is legitimate. It sounds like Steve just went on a little adventure and is just a bit of an asshole. While I understand the impulse, especially for a college age kid, it was a shitty thing to do to his parents. I dunno maybe his parents sucked. Although my curiosity is killing me I'll try not to pass judgement. Maybe he had his own reasons. I guess I'll never know. Oh yeah he got a degree while he was missing - no fair lol.

if he deliberately went missing i have to say, i really respect his ability to not care about anyone. emotions can really weigh you down.

What an intriguing story! Here's an interesting theory from this article: https://chi-nese.com/steven-kubacki-and-his-mysterious-disappearance-return/

"Steven Kubacki experienced something called a "fugue state." A fugue state is a rare psychological condition in which a person loses their memory and assumes a new identity. Someone experiencing a fugue state may suddenly travel long distances with no memory of how they got there. They may also adopt a new name and create a whole new identity for themselves.

I say he staged it or he was trying to get away from some debit or person, that's why he didn't want to talk about it or get hypnotherapy on what happened. It's so sad he put such stress and pain on his family and friends.

funny how stories like this have disappeared along with claims of Bigfoot sightings, UFO sightings, etc.... That's because everyone has a high quality camera in their hands, and electronic surveillance, video cameras, license plate readers, etc. - are everywhere. Back in 1978, you could make these claims or even claim you were abducted up into a UFO - but if you claim it nowadays, people expect more than just your wild tale. The few "Bigfoot" and alien claims are generally accompanied by horribly blurry, undecipherable photos - almost as if those making the claim expect us all to believe you ran and got the worst 1950's camera you could find to document your sighting! If the guy ran a marathon in Wisconsin, why isn't there a record of it? If the guy had lots of items, couldn't some be tracked to their point of purchase? Most people who pull off one of these "disappearances" (eg- Amanda Eller, Lisa Theris...) end up trying to cash in by writing a book - https://www.amazon.com/Naked-Only-Survive-Johnny-Adams/dp/1981274901 --

There are still plenty of UFO and Bigfoot claims to this day, in fact, more UFO/alien claims today than in the 1970's with loads of videos and pictures that are debated among skeptics and believers constantly. Tht phenomenon certainly has not gone away with the advent of new technology
